2005 MSM Rapid Behavioral Assessment-SC Men’s Health Survey 

Purpose: To survey to assess health behaviors of gay and bisexual men ages 18 and up.

Eligibility: 18 years of age and older, anyone who was not born female. (This includes persons who birth sex was male, intersex, ambiguous, or unknown).

Administered May 21, 2005, at the South Carolina Pride Celebration.

Survey responses collected by trained interviewers

 

2011 Survey of African American Men who have Sex with Women (AAMSW)/ African American Men and HIV/AIDS in South Carolina.

Purpose: To survey African American/Black Men in South Carolina who have Sex with Women as to their knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and behaviors related to HIV.

Target Population:  African American men over the age of 18 that attend selected Community Health Centers, DHEC clinics, or participated in outreach and/or received services from the STD/HIV Division’s prevention contractors and community partners.

Proposed Sample Size: convenience sample size of 500.

Implementation: September 2011

Methodology: A total of 640 surveys were mailed. A total of 416 were returned for a response rate of 65%.

2012 Needs Assessment Survey of the HIV Prevention and Care Needs of Hispanic/Latino Men and Women in South Carolina

Target Population:   Any person who identified as Hispanic or Latino, is 18 or older, and living in SC.

Survey implementation and HIV 101 workshop. Assessed HIV/AIDS knowledge, HIV/AIDS information and services, risk and prevention behavior, condom use, and about tattoos and drugs.

Implementation – September and October 2012

 

2011 Survey African American Women and HIV/AIDS in South Carolina.

To survey African American/Black women in South Carolina who identify as heterosexual as to their knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and behaviors related to HIV.

Proposed Sample Size: convenience sample size of 500. N=318.

Implementation – August – December 2010

 

2013 White Men who have Sex with Men and HIV/AIDS in South Carolina

Purpose: to gain a better understanding of the behaviors, attitudes, and beliefs about HIV, and assess the level of HIV knowledge among this population.

Survey Measures: Demographic and other participant characteristics; sexual behaviors, HIV/STD testing, knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs; and alcohol and other drug use.

478 individuals identified as MSM as part of the LGBT Needs Assessment, final sample size of 383 White MSM.

 

2016/2017 Return to Care Assessment

Target population: Clients living with HIV or AIDS (PLWHA) who meet one of the following at risk for falling out care criteria: A) Marginally engaged in care is defined as a person who has not had a visit with a medical provider with prescribing privileges in greater than 6 months* or who has a pattern of missed appointments (for any core medical service) and/or missed anti-retroviral (ARV) refills or B) Out of care and returning to care after being out of care greater than a year.

Data Collection: Paper form until Module was development in Provide Enterprise, Careware.

 

2019 Transgender Survey - The Health Initiative Survey (THIS):

At the time, no previous statewide study has been administered to transgender people in South Carolina. Purpose of study was to learn about the health needs and concerns of transgender people living in South Carolina. Questions on health status and ability to get health care, and life experiences such as violence, substance abuse, housing, employment, and HIV/AIDS. Survey results will be used to increase awareness and transgender-sensitive services for transgender persons in South Carolina.

Target population: has lived or wants to live full-time in a gender opposite to their birth or physical sex; has modified or wants to physically modify his/her body to match who the person feels who they really are inside; or has worn or wants to wear the clothing of the opposite sex, in order to express an inner cross-gender identity. Additionally, the person must be 18 years old or older and live (or attend school) in South Carolina.

 

HIV and Aging Survey:

This is an HIV and Aging survey that assessed among South Carolina residents age 50 years and older. 

Paper surveys available at 2019 SC HIV, STD, and Viral Hepatitis Conference.  A drawing of four $25 gift cards took place at the end of the conference.  Emails/cell phone numbers were kept separate from anonymous surveys. Web-based survey available from December 17, 2019 to February 19, 2021. All paper surveys were entered into SurveyMonkey to create one final dataset.

Notable facts about participants & socio-demographics represented are:

64 individuals initiated the survey. Out of the 64 individuals, 50 completed all items on the survey.

The age range was 50-72 years old, with the median age being 55.8 years.
